The Pinzgauer is a highly mobile all-terrain vehicle, developed by Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Austria starting in 1971. Its name comes from the Pinzgauer horse breed, renowned for its endurance. Initially designed for military use, the Pinzgauer was offered in 4x4 and 6x6 configurations, earning a strong reputation for its load capacity and traction in difficult terrain. Produced in Austria until 2000, it was later built under the Pinzgauer Ltd. brand and eventually by BAE Systems.
The Pinzgauer did not compete as a rally car in the WRC or in traditional categories.
Its significance comes from African rally-raids such as the Paris-Dakar, where several private teams and organizations used it as an assistance and logistics vehicle during the 1980s and 1990s.
Its robustness and reliability made it especially suitable for transporting spare parts, mechanics, and supplies across long and demanding desert stages.
