Mercedes-Benz is a German luxury automobile and industrial vehicle brand officially founded in 1926 after the merger of Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft and Benz & Cie. It is recognized as one of the world's most prestigious automotive companies, pioneering in safety, technology and quality. In motorsport, Mercedes has been closely linked to Formula 1 and touring car competitions, although it also left a particular mark in the world of rallying, especially in the 1950s and 1970s.
Mercedes-Benz's relationship with rallying has been intermittent, with very outstanding moments although without a prolonged WRC program like that of other European or Japanese brands. In the 1950s the brand gained international prestige in rally-raid type endurance events and marathons. The Mercedes 300 SL "Gullwing" shone in the 1952 Carrera Panamericana, achieving 1st and 2nd place finishes that reinforced its sporting image.
In the 1970s the most emblematic rally model was the Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC (C107). Between 1978 and 1980 the brand competed in the World Rally Championship (WRC) with partial official support.
Mercedes achieved even greater notoriety in rally-raids, especially in the Dakar Rally. In 1983 the G-Class off-road vehicle achieved overall victory with Jacky Ickx and Claude Brasseur as crew. Additionally, Unimog trucks and other vehicles from the brand have been regular protagonists in African raids, both as competition cars and support vehicles.
In the modern era, although Mercedes does not officially compete in the WRC, its off-road vehicles and SUVs (G-Class, ML, etc.) continue to be regular participants in rally-raids and adventure events. The Unimogs, for their part, maintain a prominent presence in extreme endurance competitions.
