Jaguar is a British car manufacturer whose origins date back to 1922, although the brand adopted the Jaguar name in 1945. It is known both for its luxury vehicles and for its distinguished participation in endurance racing, particularly at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where it has accumulated a total of seven victories. Its greatest sporting successes are concentrated in two periods: the 1950s and the late 1980s and early 1990s. During the first, Jaguar developed models specifically designed for competition such as the C-Type and the D-Type, with which it introduced significant technical innovations, including the use of disc brakes and advanced aerodynamic solutions. These models achieved five victories at Le Mans between 1951 and 1957, after which the brand officially withdrew from competition, although the private team Ecurie Ecosse still won in 1957 with an ex-works D-Type. The Jaguar E-Type, unveiled in 1961, was not conceived as a pure racing car, but derived directly from the experience accumulated with the D-Type. Although its primary role was as a road car, competition versions such as the Lightweight E-Type did exist, participating in GT races during the 1960s with modest results against rivals such as Ferrari. Jaguar returned to Le Mans in the 1980s with the TWR (Tom Walkinshaw Racing) team, achieving two further victories: in 1988 with the XJR-9 and in 1990 with the XJR-12. In the 21st century, the brand has had a more limited presence in traditional motorsport, competing mainly in Formula E as part of its electrification strategy.
