THE BRAND IN RALLYING
← Back to brands
Citroën has built one of the most successful trajectories in the history of the World Rally Championship (WRC), becoming the brand with the highest number of victories and titles in the competition. No manufacturer has won more world rallies (102) or more world championships (17) than Citroën, figures that reflect an unprecedented dominance in the discipline.
Citroën's origins in rallying date back to the 1980s, when from 1984 to 1986, it participated with the BX 4TC, albeit with modest results. The true takeoff came in the late 1990s with the development of the Xsara Kit Car, with which private drivers achieved two victories in 1999, laying the groundwork for the official program.
The golden era began in 2001 with the formation of the Citroën World Rally Team and the debut of the Xsara WRC. This vehicle secured the first official victory at the 2001 Rallye de Corse and subsequently gave the brand three consecutive constructors' titles (2003, 2004, and 2005) with a total of 32 victories. The Xsara WRC marked the beginning of an era of dominance that would extend for more than a decade.
In 2007, Citroën introduced the C4 WRC, which continued the brand's successful tradition. The C4 WRC also conquered three constructors' titles and accumulated 36 wins, setting new standards for performance and reliability. This period coincided with the heyday of Sébastien Loeb, who would become Citroën's most iconic figure in rallying.
With the regulatory changes of 2011, Citroën developed the DS3 WRC, based on the new Super 2000 regulations, although equipped with a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine. The DS3 WRC continued the winning streak by conquering the constructors' championships in 2011 and 2012, demonstrating the French brand's technical adaptability.
After taking a sabbatical year in 2016 to develop the new generation of vehicles, Citroën returned in 2017 with the C3 WRC, which replaced the DS3.
Citroën's legacy in rallying transcends mere numbers; it represents an era of technical innovation, engineering development, and sporting excellence that transformed the WRC and established new paradigms of competitiveness in global motorsport.
