The Renault 4 (4L) was an extremely robust and lightweight economy car, featuring front-wheel drive and long-travel suspension, which gave it surprising effectiveness on snow and broken roads. It took part in rallies during the 1960s and 1970s, including the Monte Carlo Rally, usually in lower categories. It was not competitive against more powerful cars, but stood out for its reliability and ability to finish gruelling events. In 1962, Bernard Consten and Claude Le Guezec, driving a Renault 4L entered by Motor Mart & Exchange Ltd, finished the 10th East African Safari Rally in fifth place in their group (41st overall).
