The Citroën C4 WRC HYmotion4 was an experimental prototype developed by Citroën in 2008 to explore the application of hybrid technology in motorsport. Based on the Citroën C4 WRC with which Sébastien Loeb dominated the World Rally Championship, it incorporated an HYmotion4 system that combined a 2.0 turbo thermal engine of around 320 bhp with an electric motor on the rear axle, providing hybrid four-wheel drive and an additional power boost. The system allowed for different operating modes, including electric driving on liaison stages and energy recovery under braking. The vehicle never competed officially and was never homologated by the FIA, having been conceived purely as a technological testbed. This project anticipated the arrival of hybrid systems in the WRC by more than a decade, with their official introduction in the Rally1 category taking place in 2022.
