Sandro Munari
Itàlia Sandro Munari (Cavarzere, Veneto, 27 March 1940 – 27 February 2026), nicknamed Il Drago, was one of the leading Italian rally drivers of the 1960s and 1970s and a figure closely associated with Lancia. He was Italian champion in 1967 and 1969, European champion in 1973 and winner of the FIA Cup for Rally Drivers in 1977, a competition that preceded the later world drivers’ title.
Munari won the Monte Carlo Rally four times: in 1972 with a Lancia Fulvia Coupé HF and in 1975, 1976 and 1977 with the Lancia Stratos HF, the car with which he became especially identified. In 1972 he also won the Targa Florio alongside Arturo Merzario. His career made an important contribution to Lancia’s international success during a key period in rally history. He died in February 2026 at the age of 85.
