Sergio Cresto was an Italian-American rally co-driver born in New York who built his career in European rallying. In 1984 he achieved one of his greatest successes when he won the European Rally Championship alongside Carlo Capone in a Lancia Rally 037.

In 1986 he became Henri Toivonen’s co-driver in the works Lancia Martini team. Driving the Lancia Delta S4, they won the Monte Carlo Rally, Cresto’s only World Rally Championship victory. His career ended later that year on the Tour de Corse, when both men were killed after leaving the road on the eighteenth special stage. The accident was one of the decisive events that led to Group B cars being removed from the top category at the end of 1986.
